A young boy discovers how to make a potion to turn his rural town gay. | I'm not a big Shakespeare fan (mostly because I don't understand it), but this was incredible. There is enough music to warrant classifying it as a musical of sorts, but the real objective of the film is to offer a lesson in the many ways in which love dares to speak its name. It's funny what a small budget does to divide opinion-so many think if it ain't box-office it's not worth the trouble. He keeps using him. A first-rate and altogether engaging film. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. And that put the biggest damper on the film for me. Not social revolution. Damn, I wanted to love this movie and I did. I found myself wishing and hoping that everything would work out even though i knew it probably would, and when it did, I thought it was the perfect way to end it with the two of them ending up together (Seeing Jonathan kiss him and the look on Timothy's face, Aww!!). After seeing a few of the shorts at the festival, I really wasn't expecting to be blown away by the cast. The movie really takes off at the song 'Were The World Mine'. I'm so glad I watched this movie. Musicals are not my thing but this flick is entertaining. This movie helped me to sorta get a picture of what Mid Summer whatever is about. To cope with the pressures he often escapes into a musical daydream world. Much better than I was expecting. This 'fantasy' for open-minded audiences doesn't really have a happy ending at all...in fact, this is the least progressive gay-themed film in a good while. While much of the film's success must be attributed to Gustafson and co-writer Cory James Krueckelberg, one cannot underestimate the exceptional cast. I am glad that I watched it, then watched it again, and... watched it again. As gay as this movie definitely is (fairies... guys wearing wings... rugby players doing pirouettes), I am -surprisingly enough- completely enamored with it. I'm not surprised that it keeps winning audience awards at festivals; people are grateful when a movie sweeps them up into its own world. Handsome prep school lad, about to perform in Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" along with his classmates, is aided by his music teacher in coming up with an elixir which can turn heterosexuals gay. Have been since forever. They did an astounding job. The acting by all the principals, particularly by appealing lead Tanner Cohen, Judy McKane as his mother, and Wendy Robie as the school drama teacher, is first-rate. In a way, the material is both weighty and fanciful enough to really need that level of realization to be properly appreciated. Tim discovers and concocts the plays love-potion and begins to turn his closed-minded town gay - including casting a love spell on the town's hot jock Jonathan, well played by Nathaniel David Becker with really funny and unexpected results. Reviewed in the United States on April 20, 2018. It didn't entirely convince me. An awesome job throughout. The actors were brilliant, for the most part. The art direction, music and especially the cinematography help create a magical quality as the story enters the realm of Midsummer fantasy. By this point, the audience has been introduced to the characters and is ready for the fantastic - get ready to suspend belief. The madness affects many more, of course, exactly as in Shakespeare's play, and using large extracts of dialogue from the play. Why he thinks he can, I do not know. Metacritic Reviews. It is TRUE to Shakespeare as well as if the story is EXACTLY what Shakespeare had in mind. Don't get me wrong, I think the plot of this movie is fair. Not to mention anything involving Shakespeare automatically gets a thumbs up from me, especially modern adaptations or ones that re-envision a classic plot in a new way, as this did. Too bad. I just saw this movie at the San Francisco LGBT festival with a packed house at the Castro Theater, where it provided one of those lightning-in-a-bottle moments that sometimes happen at film fests. The movie goes on to see the main character cast in the lead role of the school play by a supportive teacher who turns out to be more than she seems. Tom Gustafson's ambitious expansion on his acclaimed short Fairies is quite impressive in its own right. While somewhat shaky in construction, the cast and physical production of WERE THE WORLD... make it a mild pleasure, but it would be far *more* pleasurable had the author/director incorporated more of Shakespeare and less of well meaning contemporary farce. A quite appealing little film that stays with one long after it has concluded and raises the spirits. And did you see that Peter Ustinov 1948 film "Visa Versa"? Director Thomas Gustafson skilfully develops believable characters, manages complicated plot twists, and never loses the thread of "what if" that is essential to a retelling of Shakespeare's timeless story. Love the music, the acting is fairly decent for this kind of film, and the plot is awesome! Timothy (Tanner Cohen) is a rugby player in school and openly gay. Usually I resent anything that stereotypes homosexuals. Good acting. Coupled with the twist on Shakespeare is A simplistic but sweet twist on any midsummer night. Like the characters, you'll be enchanted by this small-budget but high-quality film. Despite a great deal of male-to-male affection (bare-chested hugging, kissing, and cuddling), "Were the World Mine" is overloaded with bigots. It really is a dream come true for him, and taps into an almost universal gay fantasy, I imagine, the feeling "if only ..." directed at such a boy at school, who was always completely out of reach. The setting, an all-boys school in a small town, will remind you of prestigeous prep school towns in New England. I was anxious to go to the LGBT film festival, but I am glad I did. I am so pleased that this movie is part of the gay community's body of work. I found the story different for a gay romantic comedy. If you are considering getting this movie, DON'T HESITATE. The movie really takes off at the song 'Were The World Mine'. Things get shaken up when an ethereal teacher, Mrs. Tebbit, mounts a musical rendering at the school of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Nights Dream, with some of the boys cast in the female roles and Timothy scoring a lead as a fairy. As a ridiculous film, one to smile and laugh at this is a good choice. A very enjoyable fantasy on the fantasy that is A Midsummer Night's Dream, Tom Gustafson's film takes a school production of the play with an all-male cast, and has Timothy (Puck) concoct a magic potion using the text which has the same effect, before making all the cast fall for one another in a night of mayhem. That alone isn't so bad, until you see the execution of it in the film. Reviewed in the United States on April 12, 2018, I gave this a 5 because it was a hard film to do, There are at least four different levels operating in this film all the time. It's unlikely to happen, but I hope director/writer Tom Gustafson rewrites this one more time for live theatre. Were the World Mine is a 2008 romantic musical fantasy film directed by Tom Gustafson, written by Gustafson and Cory James Krueckeberg, and starring Tanner Cohen, Wendy Robie, Judy McLane, Zelda Williams, Jill Larson, Ricky Goldman, Nathaniel David Becker, Christian Stolte, and David Darlow. I don't really see many gay/lesbian films but like the ones I have seen and I picked up the plot pretty quickly and fell in love with the character, Timothy. The Midsummer Night's Dream mash-up is quite wonderful, but the plot veers off into the ridiculous when it should have stayed in the charming and touching world in which it begins. Awards A bullied and demoralized gay student at an all-boys school uses a magical flower derived from Shakespeare's "A Were The World Mine is a 2008 musical film directed by Tom Gustafson and starring Tanner Cohen, Wendy Robie, and Zelda Williams. Hopefully this is not the last we will be seeing of the leading men in this film. Anyone who has read the play will appreciate that "Puck" is one of the best comic characters in English literature, and Cohen does a better than decent job at marrying the frustrations and naughtiness of the fairy into a 21st century environment. Its a gentle, beautiful film which won't stretch your brain cells, a delightful fantasy of gay romance. While I'm not too fond of yet another gay bullying narrative, his accidental turned purposeful revenge plan is amusing. Why others think he can, I do not know. Tanner Cohen reminded me of Adam Lambert (whom I'd love to see actually play "Puck") in this over-the-top but enjoyable musical spin on Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". The only severe criticism I can think to level is not at the filmmakers, but in some of the reviews I have read from mainstream critics, who take the film to task over what they claim are cartoonish depictions for some of the townspeople – most notably the homophobic gym coach and Donna's Bible-thumping female boss, who fires her when she discovers Timothy's sexuality. To act like such people do not exist in multitude and act this way in the real world and do not often occupy positions of power in small town USA seems particularly naïve on the part of such critics. Even the gay-clichés made me laugh,as there weren't too many and they fitted into the story-line smoothly. I was lucky enough to see this film at the official youth screening at the Vancouver Queer Film Fest. | He finds a flower that makes the person he squirts it at fall in love magically with the first person they see. "Were the World Mine" tells the story of out gay teenager Timothy (Tanner Cohen), who is attending a boys' private school. Though it may be labeled as a gay/lesbian film, this is a witty and lovely takeoff on "A Midsummer's Night Dream." The storyline is perfectly pat while the acting elevates it to a performance worthy of a following. Like a previous reviewer, I just saw this at the San Francisco Int'l LGBT Film Festival, where it was indeed a solid crowd pleaser and one of my three favorite features in the festival. It's a musical. It's based on a short film called "Fairies" by Tom Gustafson, and starring some of the same actors. It's basically and old fashioned Rom Com. I think some positive feedback for that 24 minute movie, encouraged Gustafson & Co. to go back and expand it to a full-length production. As is, though, "Were the World Mine" moved me to tears, made me laugh many times, and made me want to listen to its few songs again, more closely! The official trailer of the musical film WERE the WORLD MINE.Opens in theatres beginning Oct. 31st! It's one of those films that originally was meant to be serious, but while watching it there's no way anyone could keep a straight face. Masterfully done and highly recommended. "If This World Were Mine" is a 1967 song by soul music duo Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell from their album United. Long story short, the main character finds a recipe for this magic love flower from the actual play, somehow makes it, and then uses it as a revenge tool for a town that has bullied him for being gay for forever (incidentally, or maybe on purpose, literally every relationship he makes with this magic lover flower ends up gay). However, it did have its short-comings. This is what movies are supposed to do, and Were the World Mine did this beautifully. watch this for entertainment . The music is also well crafted and further reinforces the dream-like vibe - the "Oh Timothy" moment in the classroom springs to mind! A really enjoyable musical film-fantasy about a gay teen, Timothy, played wonderfully by Tanner Cohen whose life soars when his eccentric teacher, Ms Tebbit, played by the brilliantly lovable Wendy Robie, casts him as Puck in A Midsummer Night's Dream. This is his girdle put around the earth in 40 minutes, but instead of royal personages the liquid affects the class hunk and rugby captain, Jonathon, who he has a crush on. This belongs on the musical stage. Register Already have an Account? There wasn't a single person that I thought didn't belong in a musical role. ), but this smaller film is doing something far more important, not least cos it proves a movie can work for all audiences if they just put in the time and patience and that musicals don't have to have you cringing with embarrassment and annoyance-and they don't have to star a slimy, girly-looking and insufferably smug Zacariah Efron (or Ef-off as I know her). It also analyzes reviews to verify trustworthiness. We've all been there, right?! Were the World Mine may not be perfect, but it is inspiring, with a brilliant and durable concept (a queer interpretation and extension of A Midsummer Night's Dream). This movie is a breath of fresh air. It suffers a little from being a smidge too theatrical without the lighting budget to support it; and the singing isn't magnificent - but all in all, a courageous effort from Tom Gustafson to tackle quite a tough project. Nicely produced musical fantasy...but what's the underlying message? Must admit that I'm curious about Shakespeare. Most importantly I like that they show that Johnathon might already be attracted to Timothy before he ever gets the flower! By this point, the audience has been introduced to the characters and is ready for the fantastic - get ready to suspend belief. But I wouldn't want to give the full impression that this is a full musical-rather it's a superbly realised coming-of age story that takes overfamiliarity and swerves it off into areas that touch on whimsical, tender, tough and perhaps a little fantastcial, but always sprinkled generously with humour and spirit, with the underlying plea for a little more open-mindedness. Were the World Mine is a charming picture with a very simple message: be who you are, let others be who they are, and we can all be happy. And i'm so glad i did! By this point, the audience has been introduced to the characters and is ready for the fantastic - get ready to suspend belief. To the movie's {and the actors} credit, the music is delightful. I know I am blathering on about this funny whimsical film in the tone of the title and A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM terminology, but as I am having fun here with my descriptions, you will as well if you take the time to see and enjoy it as I described above. As far as I'm concerned, the director ,crew and cast succeeded admirably ! For my money, however, the multiplexes are usually a destination where most decent films will never end up. The sweet scene where he and Jonathan sit under the tree was one my favourites and so many more marriage scene & two blonde boys .I thought the director and actors were great and it felt really authentic. This utterly adorable fantasy musical is one of those tiny movies made simply in a small town and without pretensions other than to enchant... and if you see it in a crowded cinema keen to enjoy then you are really in for a magical experience. Get real folks ! The biggest dent in this movie, for me, was the end. This one has a Musically talented cast that is also a pleasure to look at. But a lot of the singing sections are awkward. this film stole my heart, and the two male leads did the same. Like "Rocky Horror," this film is both a parody of and tribute to them as icons, to movies like "Dead Poet's Society," and to such Americana. Well, parts of it. recasting Shakespeare's amiable confusions in a boys' school production, Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 24, 2016. The homophobia bothered me since I'm very supportive of homosexuality and really against bigotry and closemindness especially the "homosexuality is contagious bit" which reminds me of listening to a Church sermon on the radio and the Texan preacher saying basically "since the homosexuals have corrupted and beaten down God". So when my friend told me about this slightly skewed adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream, I was all for it. I love the modern-day adaptation of Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. There's a problem loading this menu right now. He starts off by making the whole rugby team AND the coach fall in love with other men...but things quickly get out of hand.
